The Pangolins

Title: Book 1: The Pangolins

Publisher: Little Boola Books

ISBN & Price: 9781923356009, $13.04

The first book, The Pangolins, introduces readers to Casper, a “cat with sticky-up black hair and one green eye.” With bits of body humor that young children will find both funny and relatable, the story begins as Casper’s life unexpectedly changes. She is approached by a tired calico cat named Cosmo, who asks for her help to care for a pair of lost kittens. Together, Cosmo and Casper set out to find them a home, eventually trusting them with Puddles, a kind neighborhood dog who takes them in. On her way back, Casper’s curiosity gets the best of her when she hops into a parked car and falls asleep. When she wakes, she finds herself in a strange new place, “the great, big bush of Africa,” as the car drives away, leaving her stranded. This moment launches Casper into a series of adventures as she navigates an unfamiliar environment as a city cat. Along the way, she meets Junior, a pangolin. Through their friendship, Junior introduces her to life in the bush, teaching her how to dig for termites and how to avoid poachers. Together, they even help rescue other pangolins from danger. Casper soon bonds with Junior’s family, and while she has not yet found her way home, the story closes with her feeling safe and cared for among her new friends.

The Elephants

Title: Book 2: The Elephants

Publisher: Little Boola Books

ISBN & Price: 9781923356061, $13.04

The second book, The Elephants, picks up where the first leaves off, with Casper still in the midst of her adventure alongside her pangolin friends. Early on, she meets a new character, Owl, who offers her a mouse to eat. He also reminds Casper that her relatives are considered the “kings of the jungle,” expressing confidence in her ability to find her way home. As Casper continues her journey back to the city, she encounters a cute and mischievous baby elephant named Bugle. Bugle introduces her to his family, and they spend time together swimming in a water hole. The elephants welcome Casper to join them for the next leg of her journey, as they are heading in the same direction. They meet a young impala who asks for help rescuing her brother, who has become stuck in a tree. Casper and the elephants step in to help, highlighting the themes of cooperation, teamwork, and kindness. Eventually, Casper must part ways with her new friends when they need to cross a river—something she’s scared to do since she doesn’t like water. Casper leaves her new elephant friends with gratitude, reflecting on the importance of embracing change and appreciating the moments and friendships as they come and go.

The Giraffes

Title: Book 3: The Giraffes

Publisher: Little Boola Books

ISBN & Price: 9781923356115, $13.04

The third book, The Giraffes, begins with Casper being startled by Jerry the giraffe while she rests in a tree. She follows him and his friend Ollie, a red-billed oxpecker, to witness the birth of Jerry’s cousin. From there, the trio set off together and come across a crane tangled in a cluster of branches and in need of help. Drawing on the skills and compassion she has learned along her journey, Casper works with her new friends to rescue the crane. When a snake approaches and offers assistance, Casper is hesitant at first, unsure if she can trust him. However, she quickly learns an important lesson about not judging others too quickly, as a nearby snake proves to be exactly the help they need. Afterward, Casper is welcomed among the giraffes, who initially question why a house cat is traveling with Jerry. She even cheers on the newborn giraffe as it learns to stand for the first time, sharing in the joy of the moment. As her journey continues, Casper begins to embrace the uncertainty of what lies ahead, feeling excited for the adventures each new day may bring. Though she is grateful for her growing circle of friends and experiences, she still misses her home and her family.

The Baboons

Title: Book 4: The Baboons

Publisher: Little Boola Books

ISBN & Price: 9781923356160, $13.04

The fourth book, The Baboons, once again opens with Casper being awakened—and slightly bothered—by an unfamiliar species, this time Henry the baboon, along with a lively cast of squirrel and guinea fowl companions. The animals fall into a playful discussion, discussing their very different sleeping habits. Casper is soon introduced to Henry’s twin boys, whose endless energy and curiosity bring a sense of chaos and humor to the story. Fascinated by how different Casper is from them, they ask questions upon questions, and she happily plays along, showing them her claws and explaining what it means to be a cat. Before long, the group sets off on a mission to find Evelyn, a one-armed baby baboon who has gone missing. Along the way, Casper witnesses Evelyn’s empathy toward a baby leopard, which becomes an important lesson in acceptance. Inspired by this moment, Casper tries to use what she’s learned to help ease the tension between the baboons and the leopards, emphasizing understanding over conflict.

The Lions

Title: Book 4: The Lions

Publisher: Little Boola Books

ISBN & Price: 9781923356214, $13.04

The fifth book, The Lions, opens with dozens of guinea fowl perched above Casper, watching her closely. They want to spend time with her because by now, she’s become something of a celebrity in the bush, but Casper is more focused than ever on finding her way home. As she continues her journey, she is pulled into another act of kindness, this time rescuing two orphaned baby squirrels. Continuing eastward, she soon encounters Hasani, the royal highness lion and self-proclaimed king of the jungle. He tells Casper that stories of her bravery and compassion have spread far and wide across the bush, solidifying her reputation as a small but mighty hero. Casper joins Hasani and his pride as they work together to drive off a group of hunters, using their strength in numbers, and even enlisting the help of spiders and scorpions, to scare them away. By the end of the story, Casper reflects on how wild and transformative her entire journey has been. She thinks about all she has learned and the many friendships she has formed, carrying those experiences with her as she continues on her way home.

The collection of Casper’s adventures ties together themes of friendship, helping others through difficult moments, encouragement, kindness, bravery, and compassion. It also gently explores more complex ideas such as grief, bullying, peace, family, unity, and the importance of embracing differences. Told through a variety of perspectives, each story reminds young readers that everyone has their own experiences and way of seeing the world. In doing so, the series encourages children to be open, accepting, and appreciative of the diversity that exists around them, leaving them with a meaningful sense of empathy and connection.
